RYS makes every effort to assign all registrants to a team. Some Fall age groups may be divided into divisions based on ability. All registrants in the Under 6 and 8 age groups will be assigned to a team. However, the number of travel teams (Under 10 & older age groups) may be limited due to the number of registered players and roster sizes, available field space, or availability of qualified coaches. Final team submission dates and maximum roster sizes are dictated by the league. If we have too few players to field a team at an age level, or if we have more players registered than we can roster, per league rules, we cannot guarantee placement. In those cases, our only option may be to combine with other non-Rutland teams. In that case we use the registration dates to determine which players get spots on Rutland teams and which players may be asked to play on out-of-town teams.
Determination of how teams are formed and placed within an age group is determined by the Board. Factors used by the board to determine team make-up and level of play are the number of registrations, the age and skill level of the players. In certain cases, evaluations may be utilized to determine the skill levels of players. This is typically the case in the U10 (grades 3/4) and U12 (grades 5/6) age levels. If there are enough players for multiple teams in an age group, the teams may be separated based on skill level into divisional teams.
All coaches scores from evaluations will be combined into one spreadsheet for the team draft. Final scores will be used to influence team selection. Evaluation information will be held in confidence, and will not be shared to anyone not involved in drafting a team If teams are playing in different skill divisions for an age group, the highest division team(s) pick players first.
Divisional team selection will be based upon:
Appropriate age group coach assessments during evaluations
Knowledge of players skills & abilities by coaches
Player attitude, work ethic, and commitment
Once these teams have been determined, lower division teams pick.
If there is more than one team for the same division in an age group, the coach(s) children are automatically placed on that coach’s team. From there, each team will alternate selections until all players have been assigned a team.
The Rutland Youth Soccer Board will make the final decision on player selection if conflicts ensue.
